The Salvador Darlings

Hiya everyone! Hope you're all good.

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing the incredibly unique and talented The Salvador Darlings. A trip-hop/electronic duo based in London, UK.
Read on and see what happened when we stopped to have a quick chin wag...

1. The Salvador Darlings! Hello, how are you?

Hey! Fine thanks, it’s nice to take a break from the studio to talk to you.

 2. Please, take a minute to introduce yourselves to me and anyone reading this right now...

We are Bryan Borcherds, the producer who takes care of all musical and recording parts & Carine Fierobe, singer, writer and composer of voice melody parts. The Salvador Darlings is born from a very good feeling between us, a complementarity in how to feel music and a similarity in the way of expressing this music.

 3. When you were growing up, what kind of music were you often surrounded by? Do you think those songs influenced your music taste at all?

Carine: My brothers mostly listened Old School Hip-Hop and all the time my parents listened to Michael Jackson and The Beatles so maybe I was influenced by their kinds of music, but I remember that I listened to everything. All it’s about one song I think and as far as I remember I fell in love with the song “Gangsta Paradise” by Coolio, I don’t really know why but I always feel good when I listen it, I think I feel it soul. When I was a child I didn’t really realize what the song talking about but the music was so good!

Bryan: It was mostly music playing on the radio, my parents always had the radio on so it was a mix, but mostly ‘older’ music. The track I remember best from a very young age is called The Laughing Policeman by Charles Penrose, it has this brilliant chorus with loud and melodic laughter and it’s very catchy. I used to sing and laugh along to that, and it’s still one of my favourite tracks of all time.

 4. Ah Carine! I love Gangsta's Paradise!
While we're on the topic of 'past music', tell me your all-time favourite 90's tune!

Bryan: Oh dear. Motown Philly by Boyz II Men is the first that springs to mind, it’s actually a very good song! In the 90’s I was obsessed with The Smashing Pumpkins, still one of the greatest bands of all time, so it’d have to be one of their songs.

Carine: Actually I think I have already given my answer but so many songs come to me now so I just can’t mention only one sorry! “Lemon Tree” of Fool’s Garden was one of my favourite song when I was a child. “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve as well which is based on an Andrew Loog Oldham orchestral version of The Rolling Stones' song, "The Last Time", has always fascinated me a lot. This melody completely carries me away. “Transylvanian Concubine” of Rasputina had me obsessed for a long time by its darkness. And of course I’m completely addicted to many other songs and albums.

 5. I've been listening to your debut single 'Show World' on repeat for far too long, I absolutely love it. I also love the obvious passion you seem to have for London, I adore finding people who share that passion for this city. What first brought the idea into your head to record outside? (genius idea, by the way)

Thank you Gemma, happy that you are enjoying it. We are very influenced by the city we live in; the history, the people, the culture, the energy. The Salvador Darlings was born in London when we met, so we try to capture some of the magic of London in our recordings. For us it makes it a bit more exciting to record instead of being in the studio all day, and it’s great that we can capture some of the London vibe and include it in our music and on recordings. For Show World we recorded additional vocals in Trafalgar Square on the coldest night of the year. You can hear the noise of the fountains, buses rumbling by, and a security guard asking what the hell we are doing and trying to remove us from the square.

6. I see you've been described as 'The new queen of Trip-Hop' and 'Female fronted Electronica at its best', how does it feel to hear such positive feedback, so early on in the band's career?

Carine: It’s so nice! Actually I’m very surprised of this first positive feedback and the kind words people say about me. I’m very happy to meet Bryan at this time of my life, his music makes the difference.

Bryan: Are you sure that they’re talking about Carine? They might be referring to me at the Queen. If that’s the case, I’m insulted, yet slightly flattered.

7. Well Bryan, now that you mention it... You should be flattered! For sure.
Now, Describe The Salvador Darlings in 3 words...

Bryan: Beats. Seduction. Antibacterial.

Carine: Passion. Smooth. Natural.

8. When was the last time you laughed so hard, you cried?

Carine: Ah ah! When a misunderstanding about “Ratatouille” happened, the movie and the food, with my Italian roommate who’s doesn’t speak well English. So funny!

Bryan: I have recently bought a fart machine, you know, one that you put under someone’s chair and push a button. It’s hilarious. Be careful, you might be next…

9. Bring it, Bryan! If you could collaborate with any band/musician, from the past or present, who would you work with?

Bryan: Kanye West, just so that I could sit him down and give him a good slap across the face.

Carine: No to violence Bryan! It could be a pleasure to meet the band Massive Attack or Portishead for me.

10. Massive Attack would be awesome!
Finally, is there anything you can tell us about any up & coming singles, albums or tours?! Or is that classified information?

Our single, Show World, has just been released so we’re very happy about that. There are quite a few songs nearing completion, we were in the studio last night recording vocals for two new songs, and more coming after that.
It all depends on what our fans want from us, we will release a full album but we’ll probably give our close fans exclusive tracks as and when they’re done. Yes we’ll do gigs, we are working on being able to do small gigs in our fans’ living rooms to ‘take the gig to them’, it’s more fun and we get to meet the fans personally. Go and hassle us on our website and social media, we love to hear from you!
